The button dilemma and how to determine optimal buttonhole size – O dilema dos botões e como determinar o tamanho das casas de botão

EN Summary: Chanel buttons (the authentic ones) are exclusive, rare and very expensive and play an important part in the Classic French Jacket allure. I’m not using real Chanel buttons on my jacket but want to choose the buttons which will complement the design better and make for an unforgettable couture jacket. Even so, I must not forget the practicality of the buttons: on this jacket I plan on making Chanel-style handworked buttonholes so it is important to know the size of the buttonhole and if it will be compatible with the fabric that I’m using.

EN: So it all came down to deciding between the black passemanerie buttons (which were purchased in advance and seem like the perfect choice regarding to matching the black fringed trim) and the crystal/metal ones, carved into the shape of flowers, which I saw and bought later because unlike the passemanerie buttons, they were available in two sizes. It was only when I started thinking about the handworked buttonholes that I was faced with a problem regarding the passemanerie buttons: the size of the buttonhole. You see, these buttons are quite high:

EN: For determining the buttonhole size I used my tape-measure around the button, divided by two and added 2mm (roughly 1/8 inch), which leave me with a 32mm buttonhole (1 ¼ inch!), which I consider too long for this thin fabric, even if it is reinforced with fusible interfacing and silk organza; the buttonhole looks out of proportion when compared with the 27mm needed for the crystal/metallic button. Besides, passemanerie buttons are well known for not sliding well through buttonholes. The decision was made for me.

EN: I can always use the passemanerie buttons on another upcoming Classic French Jacket with butted fronts instead of a buttoned closure and opt for not using buttonholes on the sleeve vent and pockets, I think it’s for the best. Those worried about the metallic buttons being to contrasting against the black of the fabric, be aware that because of chromatic distortion when taking photos on a black canvas, the buttons seem much lighter than they are in real life; below there’s a photo that shows them more accurately:

well, good since I liked the metal ones better anyway. I am really enjoying this series on your French jacket.

I'm so happy that your are sharing your journey on this jacket. I'm a few steps behind you on this same pattern and I'm really pleased that your muslin looks so promising. Nice work!
