Notes on sewing pants and matching plaids - Notas sobre a confeção de calças e alinhamento de quadrados nas costuras

EN Summary: I finished making Burdastyle 08/2016 model 111 pants last week (the final sewing review will be published shortly - I'm a little behind on posting...) and thought it would be useful to share some of the sewing techniques used on the cutting of the prince of wales fabric and the making of pants in general. Keep reading to know all about it!

EN: I was lucky enough to find a Prince of Wales fabric very similar to the one pictured in the magazine since I loved the original model so much as it was made (my plaids are slightly smaller, but it worked equally fine).
---

EN: This pants style is not everyone's cup of tee (full on the hips at the front, tapering along the leg) but when I saw the magazine cover I was immediately drawn to this outfit and just had to have it made for myself.
I know many of you feel drawn away by having to trace off the pattern from the multi-pattern sheet; I really don't mind tracing off these patterns and I do it fairly accurately by comparing them with the illustrations in the magazine instructions, which show all the notches and lines in the pattern. Also pay attention to the magazine notes regarding the sizing, because some pattern parts may have been traced for the smaller side and will have to be shifted to align with a bigger size (example: the front-fly top-stitching line)
---
EN: The making of these pants poses some challenges that aren't reflected in the magazine instructions. When sewing with plaids (or any other patterned fabric in need of perfect alignment), if you want the plaids to align perfectly and at the same time control the placement of the dominant lines, I strongly advise against the use of a double fabric layout. Cutting a single layer layout with the right side of the fabric facing up will be your best option. You can still use the placement shown in the magazine's instructions, but you'll have to mirror it on a single layer layout. First you place the pattern pieces on the fabric aligning the grain-lines (a lot easier to do with plaids!) and the pattern line markings for matching the plaids. You also want to pay attention to the dominant line placement along the pattern pieces, both vertically and horizontally, so a see-trough pattern paper is a good aid with this. You want all your horizontal lines matching at the center and sides of the pants; I also like to avoid having a dominant vertical line along the center front, I prefer having them equally spaced:
---
EN: The same goes for the center back seam:
---
EN: I wouldn't place a dominant line along the seam with the waistline, but in this case I had to compromise: I also like to avoid a dominant horizontal line along the hem and with this pant's length, if I kept it from the waist seam, it would hit the hemline (I subtracted 2 inches to the original pattern length, BTW. I liked the ankle length look best).
---
EN: Another detail of note is the fact that the pattern has no seam allowances included (except for the rectangular pieces that you'll have to trace yourself according to given measurements); this is actually an advantage when matching plaids, because you'll be looking at the stitching line, not the allowance edge. The downside is the addition of another step: the marking of the seam allowances before cutting the fabric. I like to mark them with chalk (have it sharpened if you use traditional chalk) and a tape measure as seen below (the picture shows the marking on the black lining, because it's easier to see):
---
EN: To cut the pieces' symmetrical (for example if you have cut the right front leg first, you're now going to cut the left front leg), I place the pant's right piece (with the pattern still attached) on top of the fabric (which has the right side up), so the pattern is sandwiched between the two layers. It's easy to place the pieces so the vertical and horizontal lines align perfectly (you're looking at aligning the fabric edges now). Then I cut around the left piece, obtaining two mirrored images of the same pattern.
---

Underlining the pants front (from waist to right below the knee) to minimize wrinkling - This is one of my favorite pants' sewing techniques and it's so easy to apply. I've learned this technique from the Burda Sewing book (I have no idea if this book is edited in English, I've looked it up and couldn't find it; I own the Portuguese edition). I started by using the pants front pattern to cut over a factory folded piece of lining; the pattern is placed perpendicularly to the lining lengthwise fold (in the photo the fold is on top, the selvedges on the bottom) and you want to keep the selvedges on the lining hem, they hit right below the knee as you can see, and there's no need for hem finish the lining because the selvedges  won't add bulk and they also won't ravel.
---
EN: Then you need to baste the pants to the lining along the pattern outlines (stitching lines in this case). Just overlap the lining pieces to each front piece, wrong sides facing, and pin the pattern on top of the fabric (right side); it's easy to baste around, following the pattern's outlines.
---
EN: Some lines are best transferred to the lining side first. I used yellow waxed paper to transfer the pleat lines and the fly-front stitching line to the lining side, then thread traced stitching both layers together, so the lines are also visible on the right side (fabric side).
---
EN: From this point on the pants are sewn as usual, taking care to align the horizontal lines along the vertical seams. The pockets are sewn first and the plaids should also align along the pocket edge and side seam.
---

EN: I'm really behind on updating both my blogs; I've finished these pants, almost finished the matching top (same as on the magazines cover) and besides being late on the sewing reviews, I still haven't shown my latest sewn garments on Tany et La Mode either. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up during the weekend, there's so much to tell... Thank you all for reading!
---

Thank you Tany. These are great pants and the work wit plaids is excellent. But this is not a surprise with you. It is very hard to keep my blog updated too. It takes so much time and we have to make priorities, haven't we?

Hi there,
Just the post I needed, as I have these trousers on my sewing wish list. I tend to wear plain fabrics, and on seeing this pattern, decided the time was right to attempt pattern matching. Your timing for me is absolutely perfect.

Thank you so much for the very clear tutorial on pattern matching, and also details on your lining technique. Once I find the fabric, I will attempt these stylish trousers.

Your outfit looks beautiful and I am sure both the blouse and the trousers will have a lot of wear.
