Próximo projecto: Fato Unrath & Strano - Next project: Unrath & Strano suit

Some of you will remember this model that Tini was so kind to get me from Germany; this model was an exclusive in the German February 2007 BWOF and could be obtained by special order: filling a form and sending a small fee for the delivery expenses, providing that your delivery address was be located in Germany, Austria or Switzerland (the images are courtesy of the http://www.burdamode.com/ website).

Aqui podem ver o esquemático do fato:
Here is the linedrawing:
The original model is made of a fabric which should have a glossy surface on one side and a dull surface on the other side; the shaded areas on the drawing correspond to the areas in which the glossy surface should be used to create a contrast. Together with the pattern there was also a CD which contains the embroidery software (Pfaff) for creating the original embroidery seen in the model pictures.

The fabric that I'll be using for this suit is a 100% wool crepe sent to me by Summerset from the U.S, and it doesn't feature a glossy side; I still have to decide if I'll use red satin for the contrast or if I'll go for a more discrete version and skip the contrasts at all.

One of the motives that made me post pone this project for so long was not being able to find the right notions right away. Even now I'm still making my mind on some aspects, and I will have to run several tests before starting on the suit itself; for now I think I've gathered some of the essential elements:
The buckle was very hard to find and this one is not as wide as the one originally used. I found it on Ebay and ordered it from the U.K. The buttons were purchased yesterday.

Now there are a few important resolutions to be made; I've been willing to make a tailored suit (I mean using some of the traditional techniques for tailoring) for quite some time, but I fear this fabric will be too thin for a first attempt on padstitching (it needs some practising and it's easier to accomplish on a thicker fabric). Even so I got the hair canvas (it's the sew-in type) with the intention of trying it and see if it works with this fabric:
I've been reading several books on tailoring and also receiving a lot of advice and relevant info from Paco, who has been fantastic!

Another important decision to be made is to underline or not; a second layer of cotton batiste where the interfacings could be fused (in case of using the fusible kind of interfacing) would shield the fashion fabric from the handstitching on the hems, etc. I could also use think knit fusible to underline the whole jacket, if this fabric responds well to this interfacing:
The fabric should be pre-treated for shrinkage (not only the fabric but all the cotton tapes and some interfacings) because wool crepe is due to shrink substantially in the presence of heat and moisture. Carolyn wrote a great article about the way she prefers to pre-treat wool crepe and I will refer to her blog entry on this subject, as I will explain this technique to those of Portuguese expression.

For now I will trace the pattern out and I will make a test garment (muslin) using thin inexpensive cotton fabric; this way I'll be able to refine the fit of the garment and also see for myself if this model really works for me; these more fashion forward garments look wonderfully well on the fashion models but seeing it on ourselves is a completely different story!

Resumindo, a "ordem das festas" será a seguinte:
Just to keep this short, the order of events will be the following:

-fazer uma musselina (fato de prova)
-make a muslin (test garment)
-ajustar/corrigir o molde se necessário
-adjust/modify as necessary
-pre-treat the fabric and the other notions that should be pre-treated
-run several tests with different interfacings, sew-in and fusible
-talhar o fato, marcar e entretelar, iniciar a confecção
-cut the fashion fabric, mark and interface, begin the construction

Desejem-me sorte!
As you can see from the above list, there is still much to do before hitting the sewing machine and my time has been terribly short, so I will be taking small steps at a time, keeping a slow pace. I will try to keep you all updated as I go! Wish me luck!

I wish you luck, but with your knowledge and skil you don't need luck for this!

You have such an inspiring blog. It make me want to take my time, and as a result improve my garment making. Thank you.

Oi Tany

Tany, I agree, this will be so fun to watch. Your garments are incredible and this one will be no exception.

Wishing you a lot of luck from here!

If is a very fashion forward outfit - would you wear it to work? Or would it just be for going out?

Tany, this will be fantastic to watch! I'll be following your progress.

Very interested to follow your journey-the value of preparation for major projects is clear.

Dear Tany,
This is going to be a fantastic outfit! Take one step at a time... and you'll get there.
Good luck with all your work! Things have been insane here, what with my catching up on all the classes I couldn't teach, and still being on crutches. Big hugs! Thinking of you.

Vicki: Thank you for the good luck wishes! I don't plan to wear this outfit to work, at least not the skirt; it is too revealing as it is. I do plan on wearing the jacket alone, coordinating it with more classical trousers or skirt. The skirt may be modified too (I think) and meet a less revealing style... But even so I think a head to toe red look is a little too much for wearing at the office here :). I work in a conservative environment. I do like to dress up but I know my boundaries (or at least I think I know!)

Isabelle Thank you! It's the same insanity over here too... And I've been thinking of you too!

Guys, thank you for commenting and for the good luck wishes!!!

Paco.

The most interesting aspect of this project to me is the padstitching. I haven't done that in decades so it will be watching intently to pick up any hints you have to offer!

Tany said...

Paco: Gracias, ¡tus palabras me dan fuerza y animo!

Carolyn: I share your opinion but I'm still not sure if I'll use the traditional methods on this one... I have no experience on padstitching and this wool crepe is the thin kind; perhaps this is not the ideal project to try on this technique (a wool tweed with be a better choice). I've been trying to translate the German instructions and from what I understand so far, they advise interfacing the jacket with thin knit fusible. I will run some tests first and then I'll decide on the interfacings. This will be a quite interesting project even if I don't use the traditional techniques because the pattern is really out of the ordinary. The fitting will be quite a challenge!

Whow, what a challeging project, Tany. I am very curious to see how it will look like, and also to see the fine tailoring details you will use again.

Regarding office- outfits: I am also working in a scientific, "conservative", "what the heck is fashion, even proper clothing" enviromnet with a female participation of about 16 %...so I definetely know what you mean. I hope I know my boundaries also...

Best wishes,
Katrin

those decisions! i don`t envy you for it...
i'd choose the knit fusible, but i'm much of lazy, so this might not be the perfect choice... but definitely the most simple ;)

you will do this as perfect as always. i know!

have a wonderful christmas time!

This suit is great, both sexy and chic! You're going to look gorgeous in it! What width of buckle do you need? I've got 3 or 4 spare buckles home and if one would be the right width, I'd be more than happy to send it your way!

LauraLo said...

Forgot... I'm really lucky, I discover, that I work in a very non-formal female-dominated organisation, where I can wear whatever I want (our director general wears tube tops in the summer, when it gets really hot).

Tany said...

Katrin: I see we work in a similar environment, lol!

Katrin (Madhatter): Thank you! I'm leaning towards the knit fusible too... But I must run some more tests before I make a final decision about this. If the thin fusible adheres well, I will use it! I'll have plenty of chances to try on the padstitching technique in the future and I can't risk messing up with this suit!

Marcia: Obrigada!!!

LauraLo: Hey, thanks! I will write to you as soon as I get home today!

This is going to be a wonderful suit. I look forward to the process.
Love what you posted above showing the various pattern pieces. Good start - having a pattern that is drafted well and includes separate lining pieces.
Some thoughts: because you're using lightweight crepe, you might consider placing that CB seam on the fold anyway?.? Eliminate the potential for seam show-through if your cleaners gets a little zealous with the pressing.
Also, even if you do underline the whole with a fusible, you're still going to need additional structure at the collar area.
Have you seen the tutorial on Threads site for the Armani method of building up a lapel using fusibles? I used it last year on my silk tweed suit and was really pleased with it.
I also have pictures in my out a red 3/4 coat last year, using the traditional method - but yes, it was a softer wool flannel. For the record though, I think that padstitching a wool crepe would be an excellent choice for a first padstitching project - the crepe offers so much texture to build the stitches into.

Marji: Thanks!! I know the Armani coat tutorial from Threads (I crave all the online articles at their site) and I will list the links you provided as references, along with a few books that I own and also a Claire Shaeffer's Vogue pattern (V8333) which contains detailed instructions for both fusible and traditional methods. I really must run some tests before I make my final decision. As for the seam show-through, I plan on interlining either with silk organza or thin knit fusible so I think I have that covered! I feel pretty excited about this project and I see you share my enthusiasm! I hope everything goes smoothly!

Tany said...

Vanda: Obrigada!

Beijo
