The Couture Denim Jacket: Sleeve cuff progress and how to apply the corded trim – Progresso nas mangas/punhos e como aplicar o vivo com cordão

EN Summary: Sleeve progress report and a first glimpse at the trimming on this jacket (and how to apply it); hoping to show a finished cuff by tomorrow, if everything goes well.

---

EN: I decided to use the corded edge trim together with the fabric’s selvage, so first of all I machine basted the selvage to the trim, using my Pfaff zipper foot, white thread and the longer stitch length setting. In the next photo you can see the trimming pinned to the sleeve cuff, on the right side; the selvage is facing up and the white stitching line should align with the thread tracing of the cuff’s edge; the trimming is clipped at the corner. The book “Cool Couture” by Kenneth D. King offers stellar instructions on how to sew piped corners and the very same principles apply here:

---

O vivo/aurela é golpeado no canto.

EN: While the trim is pinned in place, just turning the SAS in will show how it will look in the end: a corded/piped edge with a frayed edge underneath:

---

EN: Moving on to machine stitching the trim along the edge: here we see how the previous white threading is useful as a guide to the final stitching (once again using the zipper foot):

---

EN: In this case, and differently from what I did on the previous jacket, only after the trim is applied it is possible to clean up the lining on the upper sleeve seam and sleeve vent; In order to turn the “flange” or “vent extension” to the right side of the sleeve, the seam allowance must be clipped at the corner and an organza facing is used to reinforce this corner. Susan Khalje’s Classic French Jacket video course includes a chapter alone dedicated to this process and I haven’t seen better instructions elsewhere. Again I highly recommend this course, and if you think it is expensive I can assure you it is worth every penny and more. After the trimming is stitched in place, the allowances are turned to the inside and basted in place. Next I can proceed with finishing the lining along the sleeve’s upper seam, vent and cuff’s hem:

---

EN: Slowly the work proceeds, with lots of fellstitching as expected. Hopefully I will have a finished cuff to show you guys tomorrow!

---
