2016#12: The Magic Bias Dress from Fashion In Harmony - O Vestido Mágico em Viés

EN Summary: My 12th completed garment this year is the Magic Bias Dress from Fashion in Harmony, a pattern that I won from a giveaway held at Rhonda's Creative Life blog (read more about it here), in time for the Sew News Magazine Sew-along featuring this same dress pattern. Keep reading for the complete sewing review!

EN: The pattern has three sleeve options: sleeveless, long sleeve and tulip sleeve; I picked the tulip sleeve version, the same as Rhoda did for the magazine article. I was hoping to find a similar fabric because I loved her version so much, but I had no luck; I uses a 100% rayon flower print instead. Bellow you can see the technical drawings and the pattern's specs. I cut size 12-14 and used considerably less fabric than indicated (three yards will be more than enough for the dress and the tulip sleeves; I got 3m and ended up with approx 50cm remnant).
---
EN: Below you can see the cutting layout (single layer for the dress) and the pattern which is really huge; you'll need a large cutting table or a good floor surface to be able to lay out the pattern on the fabric for cutting. Needless to say that minding the grain of the fabric is essential. I also advise not placing the pattern pieces too near of the selvedges or the fabric will distort slightly; I also clipped the selvedges to avoid distorting the fabric. On the right there's how to perform a FBA on this patttern (if you have relatively narrow shoulders compared to your bust size, you'll need to do this). All this information, along with the sewing instructions are provided with the pattern.
---
EN: The procedures to sew the dress were thoroughly explained on the Sew News Magic Dress Sew-along (click here) and on Rhonda's blog (click here). I did a few things differently, which I'm highlighting here. I am a bit of a control freak so besides stay-stitching at 1/4" I've also reinforced the armholes and neckline with special purpose bias cut fusible tape. If you don't have access to buying this tape you can make your own just as explained by Paco Peralta (click here). Using glass head pins (the heads won't melt with the iron's heat) and an organza press cloth, guarantees that the tapes are fused in place with the reinforced line exactly at 3/8" from the edge:

EN: The shoulder's SAs are 1" wide; I used lining selvedge on the back shoulder to keep the shoulder seams from stretching. I used the front shoulder pattern measurement to cut my lining selvedge strip and basted to the back shoulder, easing the fabric very slightly.
---
EN: The neckline is finished using a method called the French Bias Binding. I really loved how it turned out. Exact measurements for the bias strips are provided for each size but as Rhonda highlighted, the recommended width is not enough and it's better to cut the strips 2" wide. I top-stitched the neckline, the yoke and the long inset seams with contrasting thread, using double thread on the needle and the longest stitch length on my sewing machine because I wanted to highlight the seams, otherwise they would be completely lost in the fabric's print:
---
EN: Here you can see the dress before attaching the sleeves; the neckline is lovely and has just the right depth in my opinion:
---
EN: The photo below shows the tulip sleeve pattern, all in one piece and also cut on the bias. The armhole is the concave shape in the middle and the two dots correspond to the dress shoulder seam.
---
EN: I overlapped the sleeves to the front, rather than to the back (you can have them either way as long as the two sleeves are alike, of course!). I also top-stitched the sleeve's hem with contrasting thread:
---
EN: As it is advisable on all bias cut garments, I left the dress to hang on the dressform for 48hrs before hemming it. I really like how it turned out and enjoyed sewing it very much! I can't wait for warmer days so I'll be able to wear it without catching a cold!
Thank you all for the lovely comments on my last posts! You guys are awesome!

You've done an amazing job matching the print along the seam lines - are you shifting your palette from red to blue?

É um molde deveras intrigante! Ficou óptimo. O tecido é bonito, Tany, não fica nada atrás do do vestido original. Venha o bom tempo!

Your dress is lovely. Your review most helpful. I have had this pattern forever and yet to try it. Thanks to the link to Rhonda and Sew News as I may just have to give this a try.

What an interesting pattern! I would never have pictured it from the pattern pieces although I imagine doing alterations would be quite challenging. Yours looks great made up.
